Exploring G'castle and Indy

When I give tours, one of the most common questions I get is, "What do students do on the weekends? Do they stay in Greencastle or go to Indy??". My answer is - students at DePauw get the best of both worlds... they can do both! And this past weekend was a perfect example of that...

Thursday night, my boyfriend came down to visit from Chicago. We wanted to make it a low key night so we rented a few movies in town and just hung out in my duplex. Friday night, I took him to a cute, old-fashioned Italian restaurant right outside of downtown Indy. Indy is a very cool city to explore. There is so much going on!! After dinner we went to a show at Comedy Sportz, an interactive comedy show. SO FUN. It was relatively inexpensive to see the late-night showing of an 'improv jam' and definitely something that we don't get to experience everyday.
Saturday morning, we headed back to Indy and went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). Coming from Chicago, I had my doubts about the museums (in my opinion, it's hard to beat the Field Museum or Art Museum). We loved it! Surrounding the whole building are gorgeous gardens that are open to the public to walk through. Afterwards, we went out to a fun sushi restaurant in Broad Ripple...I had no idea there was so much to do in Indy!
Sunday, if all of the activity wasn't enough for us, we played 9 holes of golf at the Windy Hill Golf Club here in Greencastle. I really love how Greencastle has more to offer than jut a movie theatre and restaurants... It's so easy to go hiking, biking, golfing or swimming at the local pools around the area. And Sunday was the perfect day to go golfing...

So if you ever have any concern about Greencastle or Indianapolis...just keep this post in mind. Because at DePauw you get the best of both worlds - a nice, quiet town to have fun and a big city near by to explore, day or night!

Back in the CHI

Wow - what a weekend it has been! On Saturday after work, I drove home to Chicago to visit friends and family. It was so nice to go home and see everyone - but there were three major problems on my way to and from campus. My first problem: my car basically broke down on the way home. It started shaking uncontrollably...so scary!!! Thank God I made it back alive. Problem #2: I went to a party downtown and got a $60 parking ticket for no fault of my own. ugh. ... this was all on Saturday.
Sunday was great. I went to my sisters soccer game and went out for dinner with the fam. That night I rented Gone Baby Gone. I'm no movie critic, but I really enjoyed it. Go see it...now.
Monday (I took the day off) started out fun. I went out for a sushi lunch (my fave) with my mom and my sister. Because my parents didn't want me driving the "broken" car back to DePauw, we agreed that I would drive another car - but that I would have to get it checked out first 'just in case'
This turned out to be problem #3. We took it in to get checked and they ended up breaking a part of the break. great. So I didn't get back to campus until 11:15pm. Sooo late.

So while it was great to see the friends and fam, it was a little more stressful visit than expected. Hopefully it will be more relaxing for the 4th.

Alright, I best be getting back to work.

Alumni Weekend Pics

Hey hey hey. Do you remember how I mentioned that we gave trolley tours to the alumni who came back for alumni weekend? Our driver just sent us pictures from that weekend -- enjoy!

Trip to Indy

Last night, I went to see my friend Andrew Hoover in Indy. He's a childhood friend of mine that is trying to make it big in music. He's currently in the middle of a tour around the East Coast/Mid West. I brought a few of my friends along and we met up with Andrew at a cute coffee house (Lazy Daze Coffee House) he was playing at. His show lasted a little over an hour and it was amazing (think Ben Harper/John Mayer style)!! Not only was it nice to see Andrew, but it was nice to get off campus for a little bit and enjoy the big city.

He's coming back in July to play at 'Center Stage' so I'll keep you updated. In the mean time, check out his music at http://www.andrewhoovermusic.com - its pretty sweet!

peace.

My First Post!!

Hi everyone! My name is Lizzy and I'm a junior at DePauw University. I'm interning at DePauw over the summer with three of my friends. We have decided to keep blogs about our summer adventures - and this is my first post! Let me catch you up on life in Greencastle (or G'castle as I like to call it) so far...

I've been here four weeks now and I'm loving it! I must admit, I wasn't expecting to have a fun summer because very few students are here on campus. But we (the other interns and myself) are keeping ourselves very busy!!

So far, we have been going to weekly movies at Ashley Cinema. It's so nice to have the DePauw student discount over the summer -- admission is free Sun-Thurs and $1 Fri-Sat -- awesome! We have seen Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and we're going to see The Hulk on Thursday. I usually don't see movies that often, but with such a nice price, how could I not see a movie every week?

This past weekend was Alumni Weekend. This is where we invite all DePauw Alumni back to campus to see how it has changed. And with tour guiding being a part of my job, I spent most of Thursday-Saturday on an old-fashioned trolley giving tours. It was so fun to hear the older alums tell stories about parties and traditions they had back in the day...they were a wild bunch!! haha!! Once alumni weekend was over, I went to the local community pool to relax with two girls I'm living with. After we were tired of tanning, the other interns (Amanda, Matt and Nate) along with the boys from the first floor of our duplex, let off some steam by driving to a rope swing about 10 minutes north of campus. It was so much fun!! I must admit, I have a terrible fear of heights, so I only went off the rope swing once. But it was so fun to see everyone else doing flips and fun tricks off the rope! There were some locals partying on a boat near by...is it legal to drink and drive a boat? I doubt it...

But now that the weekend has passed, it is time to get back to work.
Keep checking in for updates on my life in Greencastle. It's going to be a fun summer!
