My Last Day

So I made it.

My summer in G'castle has come to an end.

The work projects I completed this summer: send applications to incoming HS seniors, compiling info on the 2012 DPU class, admissions virtual tour, creating this blog!, summer photoshoot, trolley tours during alumni weekend (look back at my post about it...with pictures!), decorating the office, and other misc. projects

Activities I have done this summer while in G'castle: movies as Ashley Cinema (for free!), golfing, trip to the rope swing, exploring our Nature Park, grilling out with friends, trips to Indy, Marvin's runs, Dairy Castle trips...

What a successful summer!

I'll start this back up again once I'm back at school. Until then -- I'm taking my summer break in the Chi!!

I'm going to miss my summer roomies...

The Olympics

Have you all been watching the Olympics??? THEY HAVE BEEN AMAZING. 1. The opening ceremony was siiiick. The people in boxes? amazing. 2. Michael Phelps is a fish. I'm almost sure of it. So far he has won 3 gold medals. jeez louise. 3. wtf is up with women's gymnastics? They have not been on their game recently - pick it up girls!

Check out NBCOlympics.com to find a video of Phelps winning his 2nd gold medal in the 4x100m relay.

he is a god.

On other related topics: The Green Bay Packers lost their first preseason game to the Bengals (20-17). Brett Favre is officially playing for the NY Jets. I'm sure he will have fun losing... or getting injured... which ever comes first. (just kidding (kind of). i will always love favre). But seriously Green Bay - lets get winning!

My last day is friday. sad day. you'll miss me, i know.

peace out homeslice.

When are students returning to campus?!? I miss them!

Alright. I'm not going to lie, G'castle is getting pretty lonely without many students on campus. As of today, there are a handful of students still working on campus (think 20-30 students)... and I'm itching for school to start again!! Luckily I have three awesome roommates to hang out with. I cannot wait for my friends to start arriving!

Things I want to do before I leave for the summer:
- go see The Dark Knight at Ashley Cinema (remember: Sun-Thurs all movies are free!)
- grill out with my roomies
- meet the new President Dr. Brian Casey (I hear he is really nice)

And I apologize for not writing lately... work is getting pretty hectic. We are sending out 28,000 applications to rising seniors. So if you are reading this and have just received an application to apply to DePauw, I sent that to you. You're welcome.

More to come (hopefully my life will get a little more exciting as the school year approaches/starts)

Quick Update

Wow. I think this is the longest period of time I have gone without blogging this summer... Let me catch you up on all that I have been up to.

Last weekend I went to the University of Illinois. A bunch of my friends from home went with me to surprise my friend, Cody, for his 21st birthday. I had such a great time at U of I, but I'm really glad I don't go to a big school like that. There were so many people at school - even during the summer! And we had to wait in line for everything... so annoying.
When I got back, I came down with a horrible cold. So I took two days off of work and slept :) My boyfriend also came to visit and we started setting up his fraternity room. We put together 3 storage areas, a tv stand, and a giant futon. It looks so good!
Today, I'm going home to the Chi for the weekend. I hope to catch up on some shut eye and hang out with my friends and family.

Next time I'll let you in on some info of the philanthropy I'm planning with a fraternity. Get excited for some fun activities coming up in September!

peace.

Andrew Hoover

Last Friday I took a trip to Indy to see my friend Andrew Hoover play at Center Stage Cafe. I've uploaded a video for you to check out.

In September he is making his way to DePauw to play at a philanthropy put on by Sigma Chi and Alpha Phi. It's going to be AMAZING.

more news to come later.

4th of July Fun

My favorite things about the 4th of July: Family, Friends, Fun, Fireworks... and BBQs.
I went home to the CHI last weekend for some 4th of July fun. It was great! There were 2 straight days of fireworks, bbqs, and hanging out with friends. It was so nice to see everyone from back home. (Pic #1 is of some of my girl friends at the fireworks. Pic #2 is at my friend's 21st bday afterwards)
Outside of 4th of july festivities, I played a lot of golf (aka I tried to hit balls at the driving range) and chilled at the pool with the fam. Such a solid weekend.

But it is good to be back in G'castle. Who would have thought that I would have missed Greencastle and the other summer interns after only 4 days away from work??

Exploring G'castle and Indy

When I give tours, one of the most common questions I get is, "What do students do on the weekends? Do they stay in Greencastle or go to Indy??". My answer is - students at DePauw get the best of both worlds... they can do both! And this past weekend was a perfect example of that...

Thursday night, my boyfriend came down to visit from Chicago. We wanted to make it a low key night so we rented a few movies in town and just hung out in my duplex. Friday night, I took him to a cute, old-fashioned Italian restaurant right outside of downtown Indy. Indy is a very cool city to explore. There is so much going on!! After dinner we went to a show at Comedy Sportz, an interactive comedy show. SO FUN. It was relatively inexpensive to see the late-night showing of an 'improv jam' and definitely something that we don't get to experience everyday.
Saturday morning, we headed back to Indy and went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). Coming from Chicago, I had my doubts about the museums (in my opinion, it's hard to beat the Field Museum or Art Museum). We loved it! Surrounding the whole building are gorgeous gardens that are open to the public to walk through. Afterwards, we went out to a fun sushi restaurant in Broad Ripple...I had no idea there was so much to do in Indy!
Sunday, if all of the activity wasn't enough for us, we played 9 holes of golf at the Windy Hill Golf Club here in Greencastle. I really love how Greencastle has more to offer than jut a movie theatre and restaurants... It's so easy to go hiking, biking, golfing or swimming at the local pools around the area. And Sunday was the perfect day to go golfing...

So if you ever have any concern about Greencastle or Indianapolis...just keep this post in mind. Because at DePauw you get the best of both worlds - a nice, quiet town to have fun and a big city near by to explore, day or night!

Back in the CHI

Wow - what a weekend it has been! On Saturday after work, I drove home to Chicago to visit friends and family. It was so nice to go home and see everyone - but there were three major problems on my way to and from campus. My first problem: my car basically broke down on the way home. It started shaking uncontrollably...so scary!!! Thank God I made it back alive. Problem #2: I went to a party downtown and got a $60 parking ticket for no fault of my own. ugh. ... this was all on Saturday.
Sunday was great. I went to my sisters soccer game and went out for dinner with the fam. That night I rented Gone Baby Gone. I'm no movie critic, but I really enjoyed it. Go see it...now.
Monday (I took the day off) started out fun. I went out for a sushi lunch (my fave) with my mom and my sister. Because my parents didn't want me driving the "broken" car back to DePauw, we agreed that I would drive another car - but that I would have to get it checked out first 'just in case'
This turned out to be problem #3. We took it in to get checked and they ended up breaking a part of the break. great. So I didn't get back to campus until 11:15pm. Sooo late.

So while it was great to see the friends and fam, it was a little more stressful visit than expected. Hopefully it will be more relaxing for the 4th.

Alright, I best be getting back to work.

Alumni Weekend Pics

Hey hey hey. Do you remember how I mentioned that we gave trolley tours to the alumni who came back for alumni weekend? Our driver just sent us pictures from that weekend -- enjoy!

Cute, right?

You can check out all of our blogs - the links are at the bottom of this page. Have fun!

Trip to Indy

Last night, I went to see my friend Andrew Hoover in Indy. He's a childhood friend of mine that is trying to make it big in music. He's currently in the middle of a tour around the East Coast/Mid West. I brought a few of my friends along and we met up with Andrew at a cute coffee house (Lazy Daze Coffee House) he was playing at. His show lasted a little over an hour and it was amazing (think Ben Harper/John Mayer style)!! Not only was it nice to see Andrew, but it was nice to get off campus for a little bit and enjoy the big city.

He's coming back in July to play at 'Center Stage' so I'll keep you updated. In the mean time, check out his music at http://www.andrewhoovermusic.com - its pretty sweet!

peace.

My First Post!!

Hi everyone! My name is Lizzy and I'm a junior at DePauw University. I'm interning at DePauw over the summer with three of my friends. We have decided to keep blogs about our summer adventures - and this is my first post! Let me catch you up on life in Greencastle (or G'castle as I like to call it) so far...

I've been here four weeks now and I'm loving it! I must admit, I wasn't expecting to have a fun summer because very few students are here on campus. But we (the other interns and myself) are keeping ourselves very busy!!

So far, we have been going to weekly movies at Ashley Cinema. It's so nice to have the DePauw student discount over the summer -- admission is free Sun-Thurs and $1 Fri-Sat -- awesome! We have seen Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and we're going to see The Hulk on Thursday. I usually don't see movies that often, but with such a nice price, how could I not see a movie every week?

This past weekend was Alumni Weekend. This is where we invite all DePauw Alumni back to campus to see how it has changed. And with tour guiding being a part of my job, I spent most of Thursday-Saturday on an old-fashioned trolley giving tours. It was so fun to hear the older alums tell stories about parties and traditions they had back in the day...they were a wild bunch!! haha!! Once alumni weekend was over, I went to the local community pool to relax with two girls I'm living with. After we were tired of tanning, the other interns (Amanda, Matt and Nate) along with the boys from the first floor of our duplex, let off some steam by driving to a rope swing about 10 minutes north of campus. It was so much fun!! I must admit, I have a terrible fear of heights, so I only went off the rope swing once. But it was so fun to see everyone else doing flips and fun tricks off the rope! There were some locals partying on a boat near by...is it legal to drink and drive a boat? I doubt it...

But now that the weekend has passed, it is time to get back to work.
Keep checking in for updates on my life in Greencastle. It's going to be a fun summer!
